Voodoo Doughnut Chicago Review: A Deliciously High Experience

by | Mar 5, 2024

Voodoo Doughnut storefront in Chicago

Founded in Portland, Voodoo Doughnut (945 W Randolph St in Chicago) was one of the most anticipated new doughnut spots in the city after already gaining popularity with their 21 other locations.

After missing their grand opening in trendy Fulton Market on December 16th, I knew it was finally time to try the iconic shop, but not before enhancing the experience with a little bit of cannabis!

The Weed

I smoked Sweet Tea from Nature’s Grace and Wellness, and enjoyed a clear-headed, refreshing effect with a sprinkle of body relaxation. The initial smell after grinding it up was cheesy, spicy, and herbal with a little bit of citrus, almost a charcuterie board profile. The flavor was similar, with speckles of smoky tea every other toke.

This strain is the perfect pairing for a food-based excursion. The sativa effects had me feeling bouncy and happy, but it wasn’t an overwhelming sensation—I still felt calm and grounded enough to interact comfortably with strangers and try something new!

The Shop

The proximity of Voodoo Doughnut to the Morgan CTA train stop places them right in the heart of the buzzing Fulton Market neighborhood. In a city known for good food, it’s important to stand out, and Voodoo does just that with a bright-pink exterior.

When first walking into the bakery, you’re hit with that unmistakable smell of fried dough, and a modern, bright interior with exposed brick and more pink on the walls. If you’re high like I was when I went, you will probably notice the rotating carousels of doughnuts nestled by the registers first. This is perfect, because they also serve as a literal menu. Or, you can ask the very nice staff what they recommend!

The Doughnuts

I picked up four doughnuts and took them home to try—three yeast, and one cake. The cake doughnut was coated in a simple and lovely dusting cinnamon sugar. All three of the yeast doughnuts were fluffy, flavorful and decorated with care. Overall, I really enjoyed each one, and felt the Sweet Tea was a great compliment to the experience. By the time I made it back home to try my treats, my high had melted from an uplifting cerebral buzz into a mellow, content calmness that was perfect for digging into four whole doughnuts by myself.

Voodoo Doughnut would be a fun first-stop before a day exploring the city, or a great late-night treat after enjoying one of the many amazing restaurants in Fulton Market and West Loop. One Google reviewer says: “Let me paint the picture for you. Take an edible, order 5 of these bad boys and let the donuts take you on a journey…” And, reader, I’d have to agree.

So, grab a little Sweet Tea from nuEra on North Ave, and swing by Voodoo Doughnut afterwards for a truly delightful day, night, or early morning, as they’re open 6AM to 3AM!
