Memorial Day Relief: Veterans’ Guide to Illinois Medical Cannabis Benefits

The Veteran’s Journey to Wellness with Medical Cannabis

It is an unfortunate truth that our country’s veterans carry both the honor and the burden of their service home with them, often confronting health issues that linger long after their service ends. Illinois recognizes these challenges and offers medical cannabis as a viable option to aid in their recovery and ongoing health management.

Veterans face unique health challenges ranging from chronic pain to PTSD. The traditional healthcare system, while extensive, sometimes falls short in addressing these complex needs holistically. With the legalization of medical cannabis, a new doorway to wellness for veterans has opened.

The Benefits of a Medical Cannabis Card for Veterans in Illinois

1. Access to Alternative Treatment Options

Many veterans suffer from chronic pain, PTSD, and other service-related health conditions. Medical cannabis is recognized for its ability to alleviate pain, improve sleep, and reduce anxiety and depression symptoms. With a medical cannabis card, veterans have legal access to a variety of cannabis products that can be tailored to meet their specific health needs.

2. Cost-Effective Healthcare

Medical cannabis can be a cost-effective alternative to traditional prescription medications, especially for those who find them ineffective or face significant side effects. Illinois veterans with a medical cannabis card are also eligible for reduced application fees, making it more affordable to obtain cannabis legally.

3. Legal Protection

Possessing a medical cannabis card provides legal protection under state law. This is particularly important for veterans, as it ensures they are not penalized for using cannabis to treat medical conditions. This legal safety net is crucial, considering the federal restrictions still in place.

4. Higher Possession Limits

Illinois allows medical cannabis patients to possess more cannabis than recreational users. For veterans, this means having consistent access to their medicine without frequent trips to dispensaries, which can be crucial for those with mobility issues or those who live in remote areas.

5. Access to High-Quality and Tested Products

Medical dispensaries in Illinois are regulated and offer high-quality cannabis products that have been tested for contaminants and potency. This ensures that veterans have access to safe and effective products that provide therapeutic benefits without the risks associated with unregulated substances.

6. Community and Support

Many medical cannabis dispensaries provide not just products but also support and education for their customers. Veterans can benefit from the community aspect of dispensaries, where they can learn from others’ experiences and find camaraderie with fellow veterans using cannabis for similar reasons.

How to Obtain a Medical Cannabis Card in Illinois

Obtaining a medical cannabis card can seem daunting. This section provides a straightforward guide tailored specifically for veterans, simplifying the process.

Application Process

Documentation Needed

Veterans who are receiving treatment through the VA and are applying for their medical cannabis card may forgo the physician certification process. Instead, they just need to provide the most recent 12 months of medical records from the VA facility where they receive treatment. You may request those records electronically via this site, or by submitting VA form 10-5345. More information on this process can be found on the IDPH website.

You will also need to submit a passport-style photo, proof of residency, and a valid state driver’s license or ID.

Where to Apply: Resources and Links

When you’ve gathered all the necessary documents and information, you can make an appointment with a medical liaison at your nearest nuEra dispensary and they’ll assist with the application process, or you can apply yourself through the IDPH website. There is also an option to get help applying for your med card from certified local health departments in partnership with IDPH.

Financial Aid and Discounts for Veterans

If you are a veteran with an honorable or general discharge who is also eligible for VA benefits, then you qualify for a reduced application fee. You must submit a copy of your DD-214 along with your application to the state to prove eligibility. These reduced fees make obtaining a medical cannabis card much more affordable and accessible for veterans–the reduced fees make a 1-year card $25, a 2-year card $50, and a 3-year card just $75.

FOID Card/CCL and Your Medical Cannabis Card

Many veterans are also firearm owners, and their right to possess both a FOID or CCL along with a medical cannabis card can be very important. For those who are concerned that they cannot possess both at the same time, fear not! It is, in fact, legal to have a FOID/CCL and your medical cannabis card.

According to the Illinois State Police website, “If you possess a Medical Marijuana License, are a caregiver pursuant to the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act, and/or otherwise use cannabis consistent with Illinois law, your FOID card or CCL will not be revoked nor will your application(s) denied. Medical Marijuana Licenses are state-issued and cannot result in the denial of any right or privilege. However, under Federal law, you are subject to restrictions that prohibit you from acquiring or possessing firearms and firearms ammunition.”

The VA and Medical Cannabis

The VA is subject to federal laws. Thus, VA health care providers cannot recommend or assist veterans in obtaining medical cannabis. However, veterans are encouraged to discuss their medical cannabis usage with their VA provider in order to ensure they are getting the best care possible and that cannabis won’t interfere with any existing treatments or medications.

A patient’s participation in the medical cannabis program DOES NOT disqualify them from receiving VA benefits, and all cannabis use discussed with their VA physician will remain confidential in accordance with patient privacy laws.
